1739 Deed-John Rolph-Elizabethtown, NJ-Joseph Allen-Thomas Clark-Stephen Crane

Description

1739 deed for property surveyed for John Rolph of Elizabethtown, NJ. Signatures on the item are of early residents Joseph Allen Sr, Thomas Clark, William Milton, John Halsted and Stephen Crane (the last four were a committee which signed in 1749 when the deed was entered in the "Town Book"). Clark is most likely Judge Thomas Clark, father of Abraham Clark, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. There are four other names mentioned in the survey as boundary markers (Samuel Marsh, Abraham Shotwell, Thomus Sluder and Benjamin Littell). I have been able to find references in the history of Elizabeth, NJ in this time period for all names mentioned (with a few slight spelling variations) with the exception of William Minton and Thomus Sluder. The text of the piece reads as follows (with a few minor punctuation and spelling corrections): "A certain tract of land surveyed for John Rolph on the right of Samuel Marsh. Lying within the bounds of Elizabeth town beginning at a gum tree marked on three sides from thence South fifty-six Degrees and thirty Minutes West thirty-four Chains to a stake thence North East thirty-three Chains and 45 Links to a stake, thence South East seven Chains to the first place began. Containing sixteen acres and one half, bounded South East by Abraham Shotwell, North West by Thomus Sluder, North East by Benjamin Littell. April the twenty-first day 1739. Laid out according to order if signed by the committee. by me Joseph Allen Sr."
Reverse: "The within return examined and allowed by us whose hands are hereunto subscribed. Being the committee of Elizabeth Town chosen by the freeholders allowed this Sixth Day of December anno dom 1749. PS we do hereby order that the within return shall be entered on the Town Book."
Please examine pictures closely for condition. Creased where previously folded with additional creases, 1/4" tear in the word "half" at the lower center, multiple small tears at the bottom (one @ 3/8", one @ 1/4", balance <1/8"), stains on both sides, pencil marks on the reverse (not affecting text).
