Antique Mother of Pearl Workbox Thread Waxer
English * Circa 1850
The top of this early Victorian thread waxer is carved of mother of pearl in a flower like design and the scalloped edge is pierced with stars. The bottom is bone*.
The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks and it
still has wax
. The mother of pearl is very luminous and it unscrews so the wax could be changed.
It measures almost 1" high and the top is 1" in diameter.
It was once part of an English workbox set of tools. Some similar waxers are shown on p. 136 of
Gay Ann Rogers' book
An Illustrated History of Needlework Tool
and she shows the style of workbox it would have been part of on p. 33. The three small mother of pearl items behind the spools are a waxer like this one, a tape measure and an emery.
