THE LONDON CHRONICLE (From Thursday, August 22 to Saturday, August 24, 1776.
Folio, Vol. XL, No. 3076, Pages 185-192
Published by J. Wilke, at the Bible in St. Paul's Church Yard, London
The London Chronicle was an early family newspaper of Georgian London. It was a thrice-a-week evening paper, introduced in 1756, and contained world and national news, and coverage of artistic, literary, and theatrical events in the capital. A typical issue was eight pages, quarto size. This newspaper was the first to publish the United States Declaration of Independence in Europe. The full text of the declaration appeared in the 15-17 August 1776 edition of the newspaper but contained no explanation or comment as to what it was.
This 8-page edition has news of interest about Great Britain and elsewhere, including writings by Alexander Pope; The English Ambassador's news from Versailles about France's armament build-up; Stories on naval skirmishes at Long Island near Charleston, South Carolina; The King's Proclamation for inducing men to enter his majesties Navy; Benjamin Franklin seeking reconciliation between America and England; Earthquake in Venice, Italy, and much more.
